The heavens, torn asunder,
Have spilt their starry entrails upon the sea,
Rained down their blackening blood upon the land,
And filled our ears with a neverending thunder.
The death throes of this human race,
Having reached its existential terminus,
Are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen.
And I welcome its destruction's choking embrace.
For how many millennia have we destroyed each other?
Too many. It is a shame
That such a mighty and intelligent race
Should only delight in murdering its brothers.
And yet I delight in it more than all the rest,
Seeing this damned planet sink into the black,
Taking with it me and mine, these awful beasts--
From my throat will come not a word of protest.
Oh, see the bombs bursting in air,
Blessed be its engineers.
Raise the ragged flag and sing praise
To the rocket's red glare.
God, we have steered ourselves onto this road.
We have chosen our downfall, we will pull the trigger,
Through our own doing we severed your loving hand,
Then and now again; we live and die by our own code.
The night now is so black and cold,
The sky slit open and ravaged, choked with ash,
And the horizon is burning.
Lord, how magnificent your ruined Creation is to behold.
Our atomic saviors, biding time in metallic wombs,
Fly to us from across the frigid seas.
Hallowed be their name, their power and their light.
This I pray: their will be done within their death bloom.
While others weep and mourn, I stand beneath a sky of red
And laugh. How fitting an end for such a wretched race.
Proudly we stole the scroll and broke its secretive seals;
There will be no more rest until each of us is dead.
Look! There, just below the clouds, they are finally here.
A thousand pale horses, and their rider, Death.
Oh, God, speed them on their way, give us the end!
Never, never have I felt a joy so sincere.
Now the stars are raining down, again and again.
Oh, God, the dazzling light! The most brilliant warmth!
I have but a moment to contemplate the end. It is done, it is finished.
Amen.
