"Check."

a pout.

"That isn't a fair move!"

the older girl laughed quietly.

"Yes it is, you silly."

"but...but! i didn't see it!"

"Well, that's the way the game goes," she said, sticking her tongue out at Medli.

"Hmph...fine," Medli replied, picking up one of the faded wooden pieces and setting it down on a square nearby. there was the clacking sound of wood on wood.

The other girl smiled, and moved one of her pieces. she took the piece of Medli's that occupied the square.

"hey!" she protested, "melissa! you ate my horsey!"

"Ate?" Melissa repeated with a bemused smile. "I did no such thing."

"yes you did!" Medli pointed at the board accusingly. "your pointy thing ate my horsey!"

"Suddenly, I remember why I'm teaching you this game."

"it isn't my fault it's confusing! Theaterwide Biowarfare sims are more fun, anyways..."

"Oh, I know. You were telling me all about it. Then I said, 'how about a nice game of chess?' And you agreed. So stop complaining and make your move."

she shrugged and did so.

Melissa smiled again, and picked up her queen. She slid it across the board, and, in doing so, leaned across the table as well. She planted a kiss on Medli's cheek.

"Checkmate."
